Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort

Dear Community,

As you have undoubtedly heard by now, there was a devastating earthquake in Haiti last night, magnitude 7, centered 15km from Port-au-Prince.  The Associated Press is reporting that “the Haitian capital has largely been destroyed in the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in more than 200 years.”  Press reports say that the airport sustained damage in the earthquake and will remain closed at least through Wednesday.
We know that many of you are extremely concerned about our brothers and sisters in Haiti and and are eager to know how you can help. Currently the major international countries and relief agencies are conducting rescue operations and will continue to do so for the first 48-72 hours.

NPCC is currently organizing a response in coordination with our regional partners such as the Del Camino Network and World Relief who we have established relationships and with local relief organizations such as the Red Cross.
We have been in contact with our regional partner Tom Yaccino (the Del Camino Connection) who has been able to contact two of our network pastors near Port au Prince this morning.  Del Camino Network churches in the DR are partnering with local organizations to supply the needs of Haitians effected by the devastating earthquake.

We have also heard from Gary Fairchild (World Relief’s Director of International Relations) that our Haitian friend, Dr. Marquette (World Relief’s Country Director), is also safe and describes the situation as “devastating and grave.” He is currently assessing the need, which will assist us in formulating our response.

After rescue operations conclude in the next 72 hours, the relief and response to human need in this time of suffering will open the door to many opportunities to serve and provide much needed aid. We will keep you informed of how you can help as soon as more details become available.

Until we have a firm response plan in place, we will be accepting monetary donations only at NPCC. Cheques can be made payable to NPCC, with a note “Haiti Earthquake Relief”.
